`SHREK' THE UNLIKELY WINNER OF THE SUMMER MOVIE WARS.(LIFE & LEISURE)

When it comes to assessing winners and losers in summer movies, you often have to think in relative terms. For instance, some people considered ``Star Wars -- Episode I: The Phantom Menace'' to be a box-office disappointment a couple of years back, because it didn't overtake ``Titanic'' in the No. 1 all-time box-office spot. Never mind that ``The Phantom Menace'' grossed more than $431 million in the United States alone.

This summer, however, had no ``Phantom Menaces.'' Or ``Titanics.'' (``Pearl Harbor'' turned out to be this summer's great pretender.) But the summer did have its share of highly anticipated …
