FED: Southern states gripped by bushfire season
Australia's southern states are in the grips of bushfire season, with outbreaks in
Tasmania and South Australia and a total fire ban being declared in Victoria's west.
In Tasmania's west overnight, five houses and 300 hectares of bushland were destroyed by a blaze.
A fire brigade spokeswoman says the fire, which is still blazing in hazardous and inaccessible
terrain in Gormanston, near Queenstown, flared up at about 6pm (AEDT).
The five houses are unoccupied and there have been no reports of injuries.
